MotoGP | Jorge Martin races impeccably and wins the Styrian GP
Jorge Martin, Pramac Racing Ducati rider in MotoGP, had an impeccable race and won the Styrian GP this Sunday. It was his first victory in the top category and in his rookie year, and also the first for a Ducati satellite team (in this case Pramac).
Martin started from pole position, in a race that had a red flag with a new restart. In the ‘original’ start, he lost some positions in the opening laps, and was fighting for fifth place. With the restart, in the same positions on the grid, he managed to get out well and stay ahead.
A few corners later, he was overtaken by Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team), who took the lead for a few laps. It didn’t take long and he was able to retake the lead in order not to lose any more.
The Pramac rider suffered an intense attack from Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) for most of the race. But he didn’t make any mistakes, in a perfect race, and just headed for victory. Mir, on the other hand, after a lot of pressure, made a small error on the brakes, which allowed Martin to open up an advantage of more than 1 second. The Suzuki rider had to settle for second place.
Jack Miller, who had already led the race, occupied fourth position, behind Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) when, trying to maneuver over the Frenchman, he ended up losing the front of the bike and crashed, then abandoning it. With that, he practically leaves the fight for the championship.
With third place, Quartararo managed to open even more advantage in the championship to second, Johann Zarco (Pramac Racing Ducati), as the Frenchman finished only in sixth place (he was passed by two drivers on the last lap).
One of them was Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), who had a great race and finished fourth. The other was Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) – the highest ranked Honda – who, after much fighting, finished fifth.
Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) was seventh with Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) coming in eighth. The Honda Spaniard had started well before the red flag, and occupied fourth place. But on the restart, he lost positions, dropping to 12ยบ. He managed to recover some and finished ahead of his brother Alex Marquez (LCR Honda Castrol).
Finally, Dani Pedrosa (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), who raced as wildcard, finished in tenth place, which is impressive as it was his first race since 2018.
Anyway, Quartararo leaves Styria in the lead of the championship, with 172 points, 40 points more than the runner-up, Johann Zarco, who has 132 points.
