Conquering Heights: BMW R 1300 GS and Metzeler Scale the World’s Highest Active Volcano
In a breathtaking feat of endurance and off-road prowess, the new BMW R 1300 GS, equipped with Metzeler Karoo 4 tyres, has conquered the Nevado Ojos del Salado, the world’s highest active volcano.
The journey, spanning from sea level to a staggering altitude of 6,027 meters in less than 24 hours, unfolded on the challenging Circuito de los Seis Miles in the Atacama Desert, Chile.
Embarking from Bahia Inglesa, near the Pacific Ocean, the expedition showcased the remarkable capabilities of the standard BMW R 1300 GS models.
A noteworthy aspect of this accomplishment is that the expedition utilized standard motorcycles and standard tyres, pushing the boundaries of adventure riding. Riding on 19″ front and 17″ rear tyres, the BMW R 1300 GS demonstrated a new dimension in the world of adventure bikes.
The climb to Nevado Ojos del Salado presented a formidable challenge, demanding both physical and mental resilience from the riders. The harsh environment, with temperatures plummeting to -20 °C at night and low oxygen levels above 5,000 meters, required meticulous preparation. Base camps were set up at different altitudes, and simulations on Mount Etna in Sicily were conducted to acclimate to the conditions.
The Metzeler Karoo 4 tyres, chosen for their off-road prowess, complemented the BMW R 1300 GS’s advanced rider assistance systems, providing exceptional traction on diverse terrains, from sandy tracks to icy slopes. The expedition’s success underscored the bike’s capabilities in extreme situations, showcasing its off-road expertise and robustness.
This triumph not only marks a milestone for BMW Motorrad but also sets a new standard for adventure riding at unparalleled altitudes.
