Horwin Brasil will use Niobium batteries that charge in less than 10 minutes
Horwin Brasil, an electric motorcycle company, has partnered with CBMM, a Brazilian niobium company and the world’s leading specialist, to use a lithium-ion battery with Niobium and ultra-fast charging (less than 10 minutes) in its motorcycles.
According to the company, the objective is to expand access to clean energy and contribute to the popularization of electromobility in the country. Currently, the brand sells the CR6 and CR6-Pro electric motorcycles and the EK3, EK1 and EK DS electric scooters.
“The partnership with Horwin Brasil is important, as it accelerates the application of ultra-fast recharge batteries with Niobium also in motorcycles”, says RogĂ©rio Marques Ribas, manager of the CBMM Battery Program.
According to the CEO of Horwin Brasil, Pricilla Favero, this prototype of the project will be presented in the first half of 2022. Horwin’s CR6 model motorcycle will be used, which has 6,200W of power and up to 150 km of autonomy.
“With CBMM’s expertise and pioneering spirit, added to our highly qualified team in the development of new solutions, the expectation is that the motorcycle with Niobium battery will be available in the Brazilian market as early as 2024.”
“We work so that, soon, anyone can use an electric motorcycle with an ultra-fast charge of up to ten minutes. In addition to this charging differential, Niobium batteries bring significant benefits in terms of safety and battery life, as they allow up to 20,000 loads in a relatively wide range, which in itself is the biggest advance for this sector in recent times”, adds Pricilla.
Ribas adds that the technology to be used in the electric motorcycle battery is the result of more than three years of research and development in partnership with CBMM and the Japanese company Toshiba Corporation.
The CBMM manager explains that “the use of niobium oxide in the anode of lithium-ion batteries gives this component special characteristics. As it is a very stable element, it allows safer and more efficient operations. In addition, due to its crystalline structure more open, which facilitates the interleaving of lithium, allows a complete recharge in less than ten minutes, without damaging the battery”.
He adds that “due to these unique characteristics, Niobium batteries are safer and have a much longer lifespan than traditional batteries.”
